Some little known facts
that the industry will not tell you!
Has you draftsman
specified F7 sleepers?
You are
in trouble. – start reading!!
What is a Garden Grade
Sleeper?
Garden
grade sleepers are what are commonly sold in the Melbourne Metro
marketplace.
All
garden grade sleepers are suitable for non-structural or
non-engineered garden applications.
The reason
most sleepers are only H4 garden grade, is because 90% of all sleepers
contain the heart of the log.
This
heart is unable to be fully treated; as such a sleeper with heart cannot
obtain full penetration.
The
H4 rating, however, does not specify full penetration.
The
only way to achieve FULL PENETRATION is to use a “free of
heart’ source timber.
Is a Structural Sleeper
Available?
The
easy way to check is to look for a circle in the end –grain of the sleeper.
This circle is the heart.
Of
this heart, up to 75mm – 100mm WILL NOT TAKE TREATMENT.
Generally,
most sleepers sold in your local timber yard (& yes, this includes the
MAJORS!!!) will be GARDEN GRADE.
Suitability?
H3
Not
suitable for any ground contact application. At all. Full stop.
I
have seen sleepers with a H3 tag in the Big Green Shed. I do not know why
the ACCC or Consumer Affairs do not pull them up on this!
It is
all about FIT FOR PURPOSE. And yes, they DO KNOW it is the wrong timber,
but THEY ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY!
Their
supplier should also know better too!
H4
As
per Australian Standards, we do not recommend the use of H4 garden grade
sleepers for structural applications which require a H5 product.
Most
importantly, as garden grade sleepers do not have a full penetration
treatment, EVERY CUT must be SEALED with an after-market product.
The
theory is that the insides of the sleeper are exposed to the elements or persistent moisture (does not fully dry out after wetting)
Most
of our sleepers are KILN DRIED before treatment. This encourages better
penetration. You can be assured that there is more mixture in our sleepers
than many of our competitors.
These
sleepers are very suitable for garden beds and low garden walls.
H5
This
type of treatment can only be achieved using a free of heart source timber.
The timber is dried, treated, dried, re-treated & then dried again. As
such, with the extra processing, the cost is nearly double. The market will
generally not pay the price, so as per market forces; the product is generally
not offered for sale.
We
can do this at an extra charge.
H4 - Premier Sleepers
Available
in PACK LOT ONLY – price is the same as normal H4 sleepers.
75mm
are sold in packs of 55.
50mm
in packs of 75
100mm
in packs of 40.
WE
have available a range of sleepers which are cut ‘whole of log’. This means
that they are generally free of heart (FOH). They are still treated only
H4, but because they are FOH, the chemical has attained an even
penetration.
This
particular sleeper also has more structural strength than the garden grade
sleepers. They are as close to F7 as available in the general market place.
Otherwise?
I was
in beautiful Tasmania over New Year. I took a look in some of the local
timber yards to see what was sold. One thing I noticed was the absence of
any garden grade products……at all!!! All timber sold is kiln dried rougher
header.
Tasmanians
are actually discerning enough to realise that they need to buy THE RIGHT
PRODUCT for the right job.
Unfortunately,
the market on the mainland is price driven. You get what you pay
for!!
Fortunately,
when you buy an Outdoor Timber Product, you can be assured that you are
getting MORE for your money.

What can I use?
The
best to solve the problem is avoiding the causes of the potential problems.
The reason timber fails is due to exposure to the elements:
Moisture.
Problem
·
If the heart of
the timber gets wet regularly, you can have big problems.
·
If the timber
gets wet and can’t dry out, it can rot. The sleeper will rot from the
inside out.
Solution
·
Construct your
project, correctly! Do not expect miracles from the wrong material for the
job.
·
If you are not sure of the best
method or materials – ASK!!!!!!
·
Buy H4 timber
& use an aftermarket product to re-seal all ends
·
Use Cooee Timber
Treat Bitumen Plus on the rear face of all retaining walls, to form a
physical barrier.
·
Drainage,
drainage and oh yes,………….drainage!
Sun, Weather exposure.
For
the Kiwis, wether exposure if not
normally a problem. (It’s all in the spelling!!)
However,
in Australia, our weather can be 40 degrees with 120kmh winds one day &
16 degrees and raining the next.
Remember
that timber was once a living thing. It may do the twist sometimes, but it
can’t do a somersault or turn water into wine!
Do
not expect miracles or “over-performance’.
Give
your timber the help it needs.
Seal the
cut ends EACH TIME. Prime or seal all exposed faces, before painting or
staining.
Cooee TimberTreat Range
TimberTreat
Bitumen Plus has actually been used on raw pine poles for a seawater pier. It
will make a non-durable timber – durable. Combined with EcoWood, you have
covered most potential problems. It does however, dry to a dark brown
colour & looks a bt yuk. So, mainly use this one in non-visual
applications.
For
visual applications, use the Cooee TimberTreat One Coat or the Two Coat
system. These are available in natural or a variety of colours.
