Dressing
your Outdoor Timber
What is dressing?
Dressing is when timber
is changed from a rough sawn surface to a smooth finish. Generally this
will involve running the timber through a planer or thicknesser. Timber
dressed at a timber yard will not always be totally smooth and will not have
rounded corners. Further finishing of the timber is a painter’s job.
What are the benefits of dressing outdoor timber?
Dressing of timber is recommended for the following benefits:
·
Smooth finish.
·
Easier to paint
·
Less splinters.
·
Looks good.
Do some outdoor timbers dress better than others?
Yes, there are a number
of factors:
- Generally hardwoods & cypress pine will dress
better than softer timbers such as treated pine.
- Blunt planer blades can cause furring and roughing
up of the grain.
- If a timber is too wet or dry it can also “fur”
up.
- Ideally timber should be dressed with the grain.
Against or across the grain will cause furring and splintering.
- Excessive dry knots can cause jumping and damage
the planer blades
What do I get for my
money?
- Normally we run the
timber through a thicknesser. The first couple of runs are to achieve
a uniform thickness across the job lot of timber to be dressed.
- Once an average
thickness has been achieved, we run the timber again until all four
sides as smooth.
- We do not dress to EXACT
size unless requested. E.g.: a 100 x 100 post will usually be a
finished size 95 x 95mm.
- Large volume dressing
usually allows for more waste, so they take off more. E.g.: a 100 x
100 post will end up as a 90 x 90 post.
What extra charges can
apply?
- A minimum charge can
apply to help cover set up costs
- If dressing is required
to a specified size, extra runs fees are charged
- We generally only offer
to dress timber purchases form our yard
- Quantity discounts apply
